A Father's Prayer

 

        

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

 

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know Thee and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

 

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

 

Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

 

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.

 

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain".

아버지의 기도

 

       

오 주여, 제 아이를 이런 사람으로 만들어 주소서. 자신의 약한 부분을 알 만큼 강하고, 두려울 때 두려워하는 자신에 맞설 만큼 용감하고, 공정한 패배에 자랑을 느끼며 꿋꿋하고, 승리를 얻었을 때는 겸허하고 너그러운 사람이 되게 하소서.

 

제 아이는 등뼈가 들어서야 할 자리에 소망뼈가 있게 하지 마소서. 주님을 알도록 하시고, 더 나아가 제 자신을 아는 일이 넓은 앎의 초석이 됨을 알게 하소서.

 

비나오니, 아이를 쉽고 편안한 길로 인도하지 마시고, 어려움과 도전이 주는 긴장과 박차를 받도록 하소서. 그리하여 폭풍 속에서도 쓰러지지 않는 법을 배우게 하소서. 그리하여 실패하는 이들에게 동정심을 가지는 법을 배우게 하소서.

 

마음이 깨끗하고, 목표를 높이 세우는 아이가 되게 하소서. 다른 이들을 다스리려고 하기 전에 먼저 자신을 다스리는 사람이 되게 하소서. 웃는 법을 배우되, 우는 법을 잊지 말게 하시고, 미래를 향해 나아가되, 과거를 잊지 말게 하소서.

 

그리고 이 모든 것을 다 갖추게 하신 다음에, 비나오니, 넉넉한 유머 감각을 더 주소서. 그리하여 늘 진지함을 잃지 아니하면서도 지나치게 심각한 사람이 되지 않게 하소서. 겸손함을 주소서. 그리하여 위대함에 소박함이 있고, 참된 지혜에 열린 마음이 있으며, 참된 강함에 온유함이 있음을 늘 기억하도록 하소서.

 

그리하면 아비 되는 저, 감히 스스로에게 "내가 헛살진 않았구나" 하고 말할 수 있으오리다.

아들아, 고난과 도전까지 끌어안거라

 

맥아더 장군 하면 인천 상륙작전으로 전쟁사에 길이 남을 이름이지만, 시와 진배없는 이렇게 감동적인 기도문을 쓴 것으로도 유명합니다. 맥아더가 훌륭한 군인으로 기억되는 것은 전략 잘 짜는 기술뿐만 아니라 이러한 기도문을 쓸 줄 아는 마음 때문인지도 모릅니다.
