물레는 즐겁고 유캐하게 윙윙댑니다
발을 굴러 물레를 돌리면 물레가 돌며 실을 짜면
활기있고 가볍고 즐겁게 울립니다
젊은 아낙의 달콤한 노래 소리가 들립니다

아이린, 차라, 누가 두드리는 소리가 들리는구나
사랑하는 어머니 그것은 창문에 펄럭이는 담쟁이 잎이에요

아낙네는 고개를 가로젓고, 입술에 손가락을 댔습니다. (쉿)
자리에서 떠나 가고 싶어도 여전히 자리에 있습니다.
겁먹은 눈빛이 졸린 할머니에게로 향합니다.
한 발을 걸상에 올려놓고 다른 발로 바퀴를 돌립니다.
 

Lazily, easily, swings now the wheel round

Slowly and lowly is heard now the reel's sound

Noiseless and light to the lattice above her

The maid steps, then leaps to the arms of her lover.

이제 느긋하게, 편하게, 물레를 돌립니다.
이제 물레바퀴의 소리가 천천히 그리고 낮게 들립니다.
그녀 위에 있는 격자까지 소음 없고 밝습니다
아낙네는 걸음을 내딛어 애인의 품으로 뛰어오릅니다.

 

Slower and slower, and slower the wheel swings

Lower and lower, and lower the reel rings

there the reel and the wheel stop their spinning and moving

The grove the young lovers by moonlight are roving

물레 바퀴는 느리고 느려져 느립니다
실을 감는 것도 느려지고 느립니다
못내 물레는 멈추고 실 잣기와 움직임은 멈추었어요
달빛 가득한 숲에 젊은 연인들의 사랑의 배회가 있지요.
