Lucy iv  :  THREE years she grew

 
             - William wordsworth - 

 

  THREE years she grew in sun and shower;
Then Nature said, 'A lovelier flower
   on earth was never sown;
This child I to myself will take;
She shall be mine, and I will make
   A lady of my own.

 

"Myself will to my darling be
Both law and impulse: and with me
   The girl, in rock and plain,
In earth and heaven, in glade and bower,
Shall feel an overseeing power 
   To kindle or restrain.

 

'She shall be sportive as the fawn
That wild with glee across the lawn
   Or up the mountain springs;
And hers shall be the breathing balm,
And hers the silence and the calm
   Of mute insensate things.

 

'The floating clouds their state shall lend
To her; for her the willow bend;
   Nor shall she fail to see
Even in the motions of the storm
Grace that shall mould the maiden's form
   By silent sympathy.

 

'The stars of midnight shall be dear
To her; and she shall lean her ear
   In many a secret place
Where rivulets dance their wayward round,
And beauty born of murmuring sound
   Shall pass into her face.

 

'And vital feelings of delight
Shall rear her form to stately height,
   Her virgin bosom swell;
Such thoughts to Lucy I will give
While she and I together live
   Here in this happy dell.'

 

Thus Nature spake... The work was done...
How soon my Lucy's race was run!
   She died, and left to me
This heath, this calm, and quiet scene;
The memory of what has been,
   And never more will be.

 

 

루시詩 제4 : 삼년을 그녀는 자랐다. 

 

 

삼년을 그녀는 햇볕과 소나기 속에서 자랐다.
그때 자연이 말하길, '이보다 더 아름다운 꽃
이 땅에 심은 일 없으니
이 앤 내 몸소 맡으리.
그녀를 내것으로 삼으리라 : 그리고 나는
나 자신의 숙녀로 만들리라.

 

나 자신이 이 사랑스런이에게
진리(자연 법칙)와 격정(인간적)이 되게 하리라 : 그리고 나와 함께
소녀가, 바위와 뜰에서,
하늘과 땅 사이, 숲속 그늘에서,
격정적 이거나  절제하는,
두루 살피는  힘을 느끼게 하리라.

 

기쁨 넘쳐 잔디밭에서 뛰고,
산 위로 내달리는 새끼 사슴처럼
그녀는 뛰며 놀리.
향긋한 대기의 숨결도 그녀의 것이 되고,
고요하고 냉냉한 무생물의
침묵과 정적도 그녀의 것이 되게 하리라.

 

그녀는 흐르는 구름 그자체가 되고                                       
버들가지도 그녀를 위해  유연히 굽으리라.                             
또한 그녀는 반드시 보리라.
격동의 폭풍우 속에서 조차
말없는 연민으로
여인의  모습을 이루게할  우아함(은총)을.

 

한 밤의 별도 그녀에게 사랑스런 것 되게 하고
시냇물 맴들며 멋대로 춤추는,
하고 많은 은밀한 곳에서
그녀가 귀기울이면
속삭이는 물소리에서 나는 아름다움마저
그녀의 얼굴에 스미리라.

 

활력 넘치는 환희의 감정이
그녀의 모습을 품위 있게 하고
처녀의 가슴도 부풀에 오르게 하리라.
루시와 함께
여기 이 행복한 계곡에 사는 동안
이러한 생각을 내 그녀에게 심어주리.'

 

자연은 말했다 ... 그 일은 이루어졌다.
덧없이 사라진 나의 루시의 짧은 생이여!
그녀는 가고, 내게 남은 것은
황야의 이 정적과 침묵의 정경.
그리고 이젠 다시 찾을 수 없는
지난날의 추억뿐이어라.

 

 

루시 관련 5편의 詩 중 제4의 詩 로 이 詩를 요약 하자면 워즈워스가 루시를 통하여 생명을 찬미하고 자연의 은혜를 말한다

그러나 자연법칙은 우리에게 양날의 칼을 내민다 자연의 은혜속에서 찬미되던 생명은 소멸 한다는 진실을 말한다

과연 워즈워스의 시는 그것만을 말 하는것일까...?

또한 루시는 워즈워스가 실존 했던 여인을 모델로 루시 詩를 썼을까? 아니면 가공 인물일까? 하는 논란도 흥미롭다

암튼 루시詩 5편을 모두다 올린후에 다시 언급할 생각임.
