It was many and many a year ago,

  In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

  By the name of Annabel Lee; --

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

  Than to love and be loved by me.       

 

I was a child and she was a child,

  In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love --

  I and my Annabel Lee --

With a love that the winged seraphs in Heaven

  Coveted her and me.       

 

And this was the reason that, long ago,

  In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

  My beautiful Annabel Lee;

 

So that her high-born kinsmen came

  And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulchre

  In this kingdom by the sea.

 

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

  Went envying her and me: --

Yes! ― that  was the reason (as all men know,

  In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud, by night,

  Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.       

 

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

  Of those who were older than we --

  Of many far wiser than we --

And neither the angels in Heaven above,

  Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

  Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: --      

 

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

  Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes

  Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling, -- my darling --, my life and my bride,

  In her sepulchre there by the sea --

아주 아주 오래 전

바닷가 한 왕국에

한 소녀가 살았어요.

애너벨 리라면, 당신도 알지 몰라요.

이 소녀는 날 사랑하고 내 사랑을 받는 것밖엔

딴 생각은 아무 것도 없이 살았어요.        

 

나도 어렸고 그 애도 어렸죠.

바닷가 이 왕국에서.

하지만 우린 보통 사랑 이상으로

사랑했어요. 나와 애너벨 리는.

하늘의 날개달린 천사들이

그녀와 나를 시샘할 만한 사랑으로.       

 

그 때문에 오래 전, 바닷가 이 왕국에서

한 차례 바람이 구름으로부터 불어와

아름다운 애너벨 리를

싸늘하게 만들어 버렸어요.

 

그리곤 그녀의 지체 높은 친척들이 와서

그녀를 내곁에서 데려가

바닷가 이 왕국

무덤에 가둬 버렸죠.       

 

천국에서 우리 반만큼도 행복하지 못한 천사들이

그녀와 나를 시기한 것이었어요.

그래요! -- 그 때문이었죠 (바닷가 이 왕국

사람들은 다 알고 있어요)

밤에 구름속에서 한 차례 바람이 일어

나의 애너벨 리를 싸늘하게 죽여 버린 건.       

 

하지만 우리의 사랑은 더 강했답니다.

우리보다 나이 많은 사람들의 사랑보다

우리보다 현명한 많은 사람들의 사랑보다요.

그래서 하늘의 천사들도

바다 밑의 악마들도

내 영혼과 아름다운 애너벨 리의 영혼을

떼어놓지 못해요.       

 

달빛이 빛날 때마다 난 언제나 꿈을 꾸거든요,

아름다운 애너벨 리의 꿈을.

별들이 뜰 때마다 나는 느껴요,

애너벨 리의 빛나는 눈동자를.

그래서 나는 밤새도록

내 사랑, 내 사랑, 내 생명, 내 신부의

곁에 눕는답니다. 그 곳 바닷가 무덤,

파도 철썩이는 바닷가 무덤 속에서.

 

 

애드거 앨런 포우 Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849)

미국의 시인·평론가·단편소설작가. 미국 작가로서는 처음으로 국제적인 명성을 얻었다. 배우였던 양친을 일찍 여의고 대부인 존 앨런(John Allan)의 양육을 받았다(포의 가운데 이름 Allan은 여기에서 온 것). 어렸을 때 영국으로 건너가 몇 년 동안 고전 교육을 받은 뒤, 나중에 미국의 버지니아 대학에 다녔다. 그러나 도박에 빠져 대학을 그만두었다. 18세에 시집 <Tamerlane, and Other Poems>를 출간. 양부는 그를 육군사관학교에 보냈으나 말썽을 부려 퇴학당하고 만다. 그 뒤 <시집 (Poems)>을 내고 단편소설을 쓰기 시작하였으며, 한편으로는 평론을 발표하기도 했다. 27세였던 1836년, 사랑에 빠진 13세의 사촌동생 버지니아 클렘(Virginia Clemm)과 결혼한다. 빈곤에 찌들렸던 포는 술에 의지해 살았고 그 때문에 직장에서 해고되기도 했다. 1839년에는 필라델피아의 <버튼스 젠틀맨스 매거진 (Burton's Gentleman's Magazine)>의 공동 편집자가 되었다. 그 사이 시와 단편소설을 꾸준히 발표하여 <그로테스크와 아라베스크에 관한 이야기들 (Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque)>을 출간하고 이어 그의 이름을 드높인 탐정소설 <모르그가의 살인사건(The Murders in the Rue Morgue)>, <황금벌레 The Gold Bug> 등을 잇따라 발표했다. 그 뒤 <뉴욕 미러 (New York Mirror)>지에서 부주필로 일하면서 1845년 시집 <갈가마귀 외 (The Raven and Other Poems)>와 <이야기 (Tales)> 선집을 내어 전국적인 명성을 얻었다. 1847년 아내 버지니아가 죽은 뒤 포는 술에 빠져 살다가 볼티모어의 한 부인의 생일 파티에서 폭주를 한 뒤 세상을 떠나고 말았다. 포는 이후 미국뿐만 아니라 유럽에도 널리 알려졌으며 특히 프랑스 시인 샤를르 보들레르(Charles Baudelaire)에게도 깊은 영향을 미쳤다.
